Janmashtami: birthday of Lord Krishna

The festival of Janmashtami (pronunciation: Janmãshtami) is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Krishna, the re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who gave us the vital message of the Bhagwat Gita. Janmashtami is now prevalently celebrated outside of India because of the unusual efforts of numerous Krishna-devotees and numerous Hindu organizations. Janamashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.

Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Bhadrapadha in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatram is ascendent. The Hindu calendar being lunar, these two events [the day being the eighth of the waning moon (Krishna-paksha Ashtami) and the Rohini Nakshatram being ascendent] may overlap for only a few hours. In such an event, the festival may be celebrated on different (but successive) days by different people, depending on their local or family traditions.

On Janamashtmi, devotees keep daylong fasts and keep themselves awake while chanting holy songs, until midnight follows. Midnight is the moment when Lord Krishna was born. The prayer ceremony is a simple affair. The priests chant holy mantras and bath the idol of Lord Krishna placed on a swing with charanamrit or ganga-jal (water from the holy Ganges River), milk, ghee (clarified butter), curd and honey through a conch shell. Midnight prayers amidst the sound of hymns and religious songs extol the greatness of Lord Krishna. Devotees break their day-long fast and chant - “Radhe Krishna, Hare Krishna, Radhe Radhe.”

The festival falls sometime in the months of August/September of the Gregorian calendar. In 2006, Krishnashtami was celebrated on August 15 or August 16.

Janmashtami is the joyful celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. Major celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami takes place at midnight as Krishna is said to have made his divine appearance in that hour. Fasting, bhajans, pujas, prayer and many other rituals mark Janmashtami celebrations in India.

The essence of Janmashtami is in jubilating the birth of Sri Krishna with your near and dear ones.
